Peritoneal mesothelioma is a type of mesothelioma affects the peritoneal region of the body. The membrane abdominal mesothelium is called the peritoneum. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a very small number of all cases of mesothelioma about 30%. We think that patients suffering from this form of mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos at some point in the past.

The exposure period required for the necessary peritoneal mesothelioma to develop is unknown. Common symptoms include swelling in the region of the abdomen, abdominal pain, weight loss, lumps in the region of the abdomen, anemia and obstruction of small and or large intestine. Peritoneal mesothelioma patients are generally considered beyond cure.

There is no cure for the only alternative available pointing to increased life expectancy and improve quality of life of patients. Asbestos affects the peritoneum is how cells respond to the membrane fibers themselves. A thickening of the peritoneal membrane is the usual answer to these fibers.

Fluid begins to accumulate in the abdomen. Treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma include drainage of fluid in the abdomen, surgical resection is an effort to remove tumors more visible as possible. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy is sometimes combined if procedures need to be aggressive.

Theoretically, chemotherapy and radiotherapy attempts to kill rapidly dividing cells as efficiently as possible. There is also the alternative of intraperitoneal chemotherapy in these cases. The statistics on survival rates of mesothelioma is not encouraging, they range from as little as 4 months for as long as decades in exceptional cases, but normally, the survival period is 12 to 18 months. The life is largely dependent on what type of treatment undergone successful treatment and the stage where the cancer was caught. Make an accurate prediction on the success of each patient is very complicated.

Most patients, however, are mostly too far along radiotherapy and chemotherapy to be effective. At this stage, treatment is subject to two things in mind, the pain relief and extending the lifespan of patients.
